Tragedy Close to Home

March 11, 2009

Over on HuffPo, I came across this article and a tragedy hit close to home.

SAMSON, Ala. — A gunman on a terrifying rampage across two southern Alabama counties Tuesday killed at least nine people, including members of his own family and apparent strangers, and burned down his mother’s home before fatally shooting himself, authorities said.

Samson, AL is a small town that sits right on the border of Alabama and Florida, and just happens to be - through a weird set of circumstances - the home of my very first unit in the Army.  I lived in Panama City Beach, FL at the time I signed up, and I signed up with the Alabama National Guard, because it was the surest and quickest way I could get into Armor, which was where I wanted to be.

Samson is a great little town, and though my connection with it is miniscule and distant now, I hurt for them today.  No town, no community deserves this sort of thing, and it hits home when it happens to a place you’ve ever been connected with.
